Friona High School- Diving into a New Language
Friona FCCLA members that are enrolled in "Practicum of Education and Training", organized an immersion program for the recently enrolled non-English speakers. They wanted to make the transition easier for them so they researched strategies to help the non-English speakers become more successful communicating. This immersion style program allowed the students to play games, talk about daily activities and give directions using maps. Just like diving into water, the plunge was a little uneasy. After a couple of weeks, the school of fish became more comfortable and weren't afraid to make mistakes. There was a total of 17 non-English speakers. They were able to work with these students every Thursday for 2 hours for a total of 8 weeks. Evaluations were reported and great improvements were made.
