SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

 

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO

SCHOLARSHIP FOR

TEXAS ASSOCIATION, FAMILY, CAREER AND COMMUNITY

LEADERS OF AMERICA

 

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will provide 10, four-year $12,000 college scholarships to be awarded to outstanding members of the Texas Association, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

 

Applications are furnished by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo directly to the Texas Association, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America for dissemination.  Applications should be completed in full and returned to the Association, which will carry out the application process, evaluation procedure and determination of recipients of the 10 scholarships awarded by the show.

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY

 

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, an applicant must meet criteria of citizenship, residence, academic standing, membership in FCCLA, recommendation, college/university enrollment plans, demonstration of leadership, character and economic need.

 

Citizenship/Residency:  The applicant must be a citizen of the United States and/or be born in the United States and a resident of the State of Texas.  If place of birth of applicant as indicated on application and/or transcript is other than the United States, appropriate proof of citizenship must be furnished.

 

Academic Standing:  The applicant must be a graduating senior ranked in the upper quarter (1/4) of his/her graduating class at the completion of the first grading period of his/her senior year.  This ranking is to be verified as part of the official transcript or by an accompanying certification from an appropriate school official.  Applicant's scholastic average is to be reported on the application; average must be expressed as a numerical percentage or as a grade point ratio with the scale indicated.  An explanation of the grade scale must accompany the application or be part of the official transcript.

 

Graduation:  The applicant must graduate at the end of the spring semester immediately following the awarding of the scholarship.  Applicant must have passed the TAKS Mastery/Exit Level exam as indicated on the transcript.

 

College Entrance Examination:  No application will be accepted without test scores.  The applicant must have taken either the SAT or ACT college entrance examination and furnish proof of a minimum SAT score of 1350 (includes writing portion) or a minimum ACT score of 19.  Proof of the score may be a part of the official transcript or a copy of the official test results should be attached to the application.  The information should reflect the date the test was taken.  The highest test score will be used for evaluation but scores from different test dates will not be combined.

 

FCCLA Membership Requirement:  The applicant must be a member in good standing of the Texas Association, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and be eligible to compete for an FCCLA college scholarship to be used beginning with the fall semester of the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

 

Collegiate Acceptance/Enrollment:  The applicant must enroll or plan to enroll in either a college or university within the confines of the State of Texas and participate in a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree.  Applicant must indicate choice of major and career planned.  There is no restriction on the major field of study, which the applicant will pursue.  Applications will not be accepted from students who have not applied for admission by the deadline for application submission.

 

Activities:  Leadership potential and character of the applicant should be demonstrated through an applicant's responses to the categories of the application detailing school, extracurricular and community activities and achievements.  Personal references should provide additional information as well.

 

Narrative:  Each applicant must include a typed narrative of no more than two, 8 1/2" x 11" sheets, double spaced.  In this narrative, the applicant may supply any information, which he/she feels is pertinent to the application receiving proper consideration.  The focus of the narrative also should include the importance of a college education to the applicant and specific career goals.  Applicant's name, address and county must be typed as a heading to the narrative in the upper right hand corner of page one.

 

References:  Each applicant must submit three letters of personal reference from persons who are well acquainted with him/her.  References either may be typed or handwritten and should include the name, address and daytime phone number of the person making the recommendation, as well as an indication of the person's relationship to the applicant (teacher, minister, employer, relative, etc.)  These letters must be attached to the application.  References should indicate knowledge of applicant's character, determination to pursue a college education and any other factors, which will assist evaluation.  No more than three letters may be submitted per applicant; no letter should exceed two pages in length.

 

Documentation:  Each application must be accompanied by an official transcript showing academic average and grading scale through four years of high school, class size and official ranking of applicant; citizenship status if place of birth is other than the United States; proof of either SAT or ACT scores; certification of FCCLA membership; narrative; and references.

Applicants for the Houston Rodeo FCCLA Scholarship also may apply through 4-H or FFA for other Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo four-year, $12,000 scholarship awards or, if eligible, for other scholarships directly funded by the Show, such as Metropolitan, Opportunity, School Art and Hildebrand.  In the event an Area Go Texas recipient was selected to receive either a 4-H or FFA award in the amount of $6,000 or more given by either the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo or any other livestock exposition in Texas, or any other scholarship directly funded by the scholarship, this FCCLA award would be forfeited and an eligible alternate would then receive the award.

 

EVALUATION PROCEDURE

 

For the purposes of evaluation of applicants, a selection committee independent of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will review all properly completed applications.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Applicants are evaluated on the basis of academics, leadership/citizenship and financial need.

 

PAYMENT OF STIPEND

 

It is the responsibility of the scholarship recipient to notify the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship Office of the address of the Financial Aid Office at the college or university to be attended.  This notice must be given a minimum of thirty (30) days prior to the beginning of each semester.  Payment of the scholarship will be made directly to the Financial Aid Office at the rate of $1,500.00 per semester in which the recipient is enrolled for 12 or more semester hours and is in good standing academically.  To maintain eligibility, the recipient must comply with all scholarship policies.  A copy of these policies will be furnished to each recipient.
