Sharyland FCCLA

Adopt a family:  For the month of December Sharyland Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) decided to bring the Christmas spirit to those less fortunate by adopting two families based on their basic financial needs.  The first family chosen was a mother and her five children and the second family was a mother, father and their seven children.  FCCLA members were encouraged to donate gifts that had already been wrapped as presents that were appropriate for the age and gender of the families.  Over 50 gifts were collected for the two families and  Leslie Womack, our chapter President, delivered all the presents to the families.

Congratulations to the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members who have completed Power of One Units.  A Power of One project is an individual activity created to reach a personal goal.  The projects are related to subjects taught in Family and Consumer Sciences and FCCLA.  Students identified a personal goal and then planned a project using the five-step planning process and also met with Mrs. Mary Jane Laing, Advisor to complete their projects.  Other FCCLA Advisors that helped were Mrs. Mary Jo Brisnahan, Ms. Norma Meza and Ms. Hilda Rodriguez.  There are five units - A Better You, Family Ties, Working on Working, Take the Lead and Speak Out for FCCLA.  Five Sharyland High School Members completed all five units; Darla Osuna, Efi Eyambe, Dana Castillo, Kristi Garcia and Leslye Womack.  Amanda Dalton completed the Speak Out for FCCLA Unit.  All six (6) members will be recognized at the FCCLA Region 5 Leadership Conference in Corpus Christi, Feb 2, 2008, and the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Galveston, April 5th, 2008

Sharyland FCCLA is collecting recycled beverage tabs until the end of January for the Ronald McDonald House program, a temporary "home-away-from-home" for the families of seriously ill children being treated at nearby hospitals.  The miniature houses were given to teachers to encourage students to donate their tabs to this community service project.

Sharyland FCCLA conducted a scavenger hunt for food on October 18th with over 35 members participating.  Members were divided into three neighborhoods and were given a target list of items to collect during the hunt.  The first team to collect all the items on the list would be named the winners of the scavenger hunt.   FCCLA members collected a total of 341 canned and packaged food to be given to the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank.

Sharyland High School has 6 students who recruited four or more new FCCLA members.  Last year Sharyland FCCLA had 125 members and this year has increased to 179 members.  The six members who earned "The Fantastic Four" Award are Eric E. Each year Community FCCLA sponsors a blood drive, this year we will sponsor two blood drives.  We held the first on October 15 and collected 76 units of blood.  Our second blood drive we be on May 6.  Seniors that donate both times will have a special red cord to wear at graduation.  Some of the blood donated is held in a blood bank for members of our community.  The extra blood units will be donated to the Shriner Children's Hospital in Dallas.  On November 1, 2007, we received a plaque from Carter for having the highest percentage of donations last year in a school with less than 199 seniors.
